Steamed Crabs Baseball Coming to Aberdeen this Summer

Aberdeen IronBirds Pay Homage to Home State by Changing Name for One Game Only on August 11

The Aberdeen IronBirds, Class A short-season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, today announced it will change its name to the Aberdeen Steamed Crabs for one game only on Friday, August 11. In paying homage to Maryland’s most hallowed pastime of picking steamed crabs, the IronBirds will debut special Steamed Crabs-themed uniforms and a crab-themed menu with food options for all ages.

“Our organization is all about affordable, family fun and we could not be more excited to transform ‘Birdland’ into ‘Crabland’ for one special night this summer,” said IronBirds General Manager Matt Slatus. “Our goal was to give fans a concept they could relate to and rally behind. Maryland is full of traditions, but none have become more synonymous with our great state than steamed crabs.”

In honoring Maryland’s state crustacean, the special Steamed Crabs uniforms will feature mascot Kalvin the Krab wielding his mallet, a Maryland state flag patch on the right sleeve, as well as vertical pinstripes to acknowledge the long and arduous process Maryland crabbers experience every day to deliver the world’s best blue crabs. Steamed Crabs-branded gear will also be available for purchase online and at The Hangar, affectionately being referred to as The Crab Trap on August 11, at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.

Additionally, food vendors throughout Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium will offer crab-themed menu options, including steamed crabs, crab cakes, crab mac & cheese, softshell crab sandwiches and much more.

As March 9 marks National Crab Meat Day, the IronBirds have also released the dates for its 2017 All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feast schedule. During select games, fans can enjoy two hours of all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, BBQ chicken, smoked pork BBQ, hot dogs, coleslaw and more.
